This is a very good read. It may seem dated to younger readers although the theme of unfulfilled potential and pent up frustration is timeless. Many women may identify with the main character and her wasted potential. In its time it must have been quite controversial with its subject matter and explicit sex scenes. Personally I found it hard to sympathise with the doctors wife. She had spent many years floating along as the domestic goddess letting her husband support her financially then suddenly everything was his fault. Her wrong choices and lack of ambition and drive were suddenly his fault and her mothers fault! Apparently she got married in order to leave home.
Definitely a book to be read with its era in mind. An era where appearances mattered more than anything.
