Deserves a place in any horror movie fan's collection
on 26 October 2014
Joseph - a mild mannered writer - seems to think so anyway. After losing his wife and son in a terrible tragedy, his faith in the divine is all but gone until he hears word that his estranged father is dying, and returns to the family home. There, he sees his brother Michael following in his father's footsteps as an ordained minister. Yet all is not quite what it seems - and Joseph's very beliefs are about to be questioned in a terrifying manner.
This movie is one of those that you either love or hate. I found it very enjoyable, and a pleasure to watch. The story had enough surprises to keep me guessing, although it is arguably difficult to be completely original with any script in these times of cheap and plentiful media. Everything is rehashed versions of something else, but this film is one of the few horrors that scared me. It is missing a few special effects which make the encounters with the supernatural somewhat dubious in their clarity but they are random enough to entertain the most well versed of us horror movie fans.
An enthralling, if somewhat predictable film that allows for a terrifying vision of righteous religious revelations.
