Camera or Paperweight?
on 1 July 2013
I bought the vastly reduced K-01 and 40mm pancake as I had previously owned a Pentax K100D for a number of years, I know I can't compare as it is not a dslr but hey it's a Pentax and uses k mount lenses. I like the size, the feel in the hand and clunk it makes when you turn it on and move the dials, oh and I have no problems with the flappy cover.
The 40mm pancake as part of the bundle is another matter though, some say their copy is sharp while others dismiss it as a gimmick which gets retired to the back of the drawer, I would rate my copy as on par with the K100D 18-55 mk1 kit lens, nothing to shout about really and it comes a clear second when compared to a Canon 600D with the nifty fifty in a comparison test that I did.
The cameras focus peaking is good to have when it works, on a tripod, 2 second delay, manual zoom x6, focus on the specific part of the subject you want then shoot, review the image on a monitor and see that half the time the bit you wanted in focus isn't.
Sometimes it can take great photos with the pancake and a Tamron 70-300 I have but other times it misses focus all too often. When I try it with another older Pentax lens I will edit and update this review.
