I have never read any of Burroughs' Barsoom series of books. I will now. I was searching randomly on Amazon for some interesting science fiction films recently and came across this. I'd never heard of the film until then.

What a lost gem of a film! Fantastic special effects, good story (years ahead of it's time when Burroughs penned it), good acting, engaging, rivetting.... I will definitely be watching this again and again. At over two hours long I can only conclude it's too short - there are so many threads and characters that you want to explore more.

This is real science fiction - the mind-expanding stuff that C.S. Lewis was on about. It's inspired me to get the books and start reading them. Here's hoping Disney realise their major blunder in how they promoted this film and get on with the rest of the originally intended trilogy. I'll be pre-ordering the DVDs when they do.

My only regret is missing this on the big screen. It would have been something to see.

A fiver for this film is nothing. Go on, buy it. You won't regret it.

This film is a comparison of star wars why ?
I got it the other day without reading a review so had no expectations i must say i enjoyed it people go on about the bad acting dont get why to be honest as it came across ok to me.
Now i love star wars but cant help that disney should of kept the comparison out of it as star wars was ground breaking (the original three) for its time. However with that said i liked the action of the new films but hated the acting so its all relative to your taste.
John carter was fun for me as i never read the books so im sure if i had of done so i would have alot to say on how many bad points there could be to the book. But lets face it if you read a book then watch a film you will hate the film. If you enjoy the atmosphere of star wars the action of avatar and the feel of Dune then this is a blend of all not just one film then this is a film for you. Everybody who gave this film lower than 2 stars you are on crack or just think your smarter than you are.
ps i do not work for disney so stop with that rubbish accusation

Edgar Rice Burroughs other famous character besides Tarzan gets the big screen treatment here in this fun if very familliar and cheesy scifi film. Spectacular effects with a good cast, Taylor Kitsch is a fine John Carter and the supporting cast from Dominic West to Ciran Hinds and a cgi Willem Defoe are all pretty good too. John Carter is a confederate soldier trying to escape the American civil war when he finds his way into a cave that instantly transports him to the planet Mars, or as the locals call it Barsoom, and finds himself in the middle of that planet's civil war. The aliens look impressive and the Martian landscape looks breathtaking, though the plot is hardly original and you can see where the likes of George Lucas and James Cameron got their ideas for Star Wars and Avatar from as visually the film does have the feel of those movies. The end hints at a sequel. The dialogue is cringable in places but it's played very straight by the entire cast.

I had no previous knowledge of the film whatsoever, but felt that this was easily one of the best films I had seen recently. I can only speculate as to how vastly different the situation would be for this film, with regards to public perception, and ultimately success, if it had been marketed efficiently.

I'm a fairly new fan of the literary John Carter and saw the film after learning that one of my favorite actors was going to be in it. And I fell in love with the movie! It has old-world charm, which is fitting since it's based on a book that's 100 years old this year. I think John Carter would have done much better if it had been marketed better. So many things were missing from the marketing campaign and it seems like Disney just wanted to sweep it under the carpet, for some reason, likely some corp/political nonsense. Basically, don't listen to the few bad reviews out there, see it for yourself and decide. Most people love it, if not really like it. Only a small percentage don't "get" it and some of them even come around once they learn the history behind it. John Carter is fun, beautifully filmed, well acted, has incredible effects, and a smart, clever, involved story. It's not dumbed down like so many modern films are. And there's great humor, too! I highly recommend it!!
