Excellent keyboard for an HTPC set-up
on 13 December 2012
The Periboard 717 is a about the same height, and a little wider than most smartphones, and incorporates almost a full QWERTY keyboard and a multi-touch capable touchpad. It comes with a storage bag and a dedicated wireless dongle. It's sort of like a Blackberry phone with a trackpad where the display should be.
First impressions are pretty good. Although slightly plasticky (to be expected at the price, I think), the keyboard feels solid and well made. The first impression has held up, as four months down the line it still looks and feels as good as new.
It takes a couple of hours to get the internal battery charged from a micro USB connector. For basic (non multi-touch use) on a modern computer, just plug the dongle in, and the keyboard and trackpad are recognised immediately. If you want the multi-touch, there is a driver to install - this worked perfectly on Windows 7. Battery life is very good. I think I have charged the device once in the time I have had it.
Wireless range is good too. I have a fairly expensive Silverstone HTPC case, and despite the dongle sitting behind an aluminium flap, I get about 4 meters range, which is far better than Bluetooth. I think you would need a 200 inch screen before range would be an issue in normal use.
Minor niggles: I haven't found a way to sent CTRL-ALT-DEL, for the cases when it is needed. This means I do still need a large keyboard available sometimes. Also I haven't succeeded in getting multi-touch to work on Windows 8, which is a shame.
Overall I'm pretty pleased. A very good product at a decent price. I should also mention that the product arrived very promptly, and was well packaged, so I think you can have confidence in the vendor.
