I thoroughly enjoyed this film - it's a visual feast for the eyes (especially in 3D), and the storyline is well-crafted and engendered a real sense of empathy for all of the characters (even the villain of the piece, the station inspector). Asa Butterfield is excellent as Hugo Cabret, and Ben Kingsley must have had a whale of a time playing Georges Melies - fantastic to watch, too. Helen McCrory, as Mama Jeanne, brought some real warmth to her role. And Sacha Baron Cohen managed to put aside his somewhat-acquired-taste characters of Borat et al, and played the part of the evil (initially) station inspector very well indeed. Also look out for nice little cameo appearances from Christopher Lee, Frances de la Tour and Richard Griffiths, amongst others - even Martin Scorcese appears briefly (as a photographer). The mechanical man is also a star - very well executed, and you also start feeling sympathy for him as well, which is really strange; I think it just shows how good Scorcese is at his art.

And, last but not least, it highlights the amazing work of Georges Melies, who will be unknown to many people before viewing this film. As a follow-up action I'd recommend watching the excellent Melies The Magician [1997] [DVD] [NTSC] as this gives an excellent insight into his career. Wonderful!

Only heard this film mentioned in passing on the radio, for some reason I completely missed it in first release, but I was intrigued. It is a marvellous film technically, some of the shots set in and around the supposed Gare Montparnasse are stunning. A lot of the content is an hommage to a nostalgic, romantic view of Paris (which I am happy to slide into). The plot is very fanciful and mainly about tracking down and recognising a long forgotten film making genius of the silent era. Film buffs will love it. Bit like LaLa land in that sense. Only real down side, this very inexpensive edition comes with the inevitable trailer for other films that you have to wade through first.

A great & surprising film from Martin Scorsese. A film for children & adults alike (not just for kids!). Great acting, wonderful photography & sets, and top-notch 3D (which one doesn't always find in '3D' videos!

Great film with a good storyline. The 3d aspect is a little dependent on screen size. When I first watched the film on our sony bravia 3d 32" telly I was a little disappointed with the effect. It was like watching the film in an Aquarium and the effects detracted from the easy flow of the story. I decided not to write a review.
However we now have a philips 4k, 3d telly, 50" screen and gave the film another airing.......all I can say is wow. The film in 3d is amazing. What a transformation.
It appears size does matter where 3d is concerned.

When it was first announced that Martin Scorsese was going to make a film of this popular novel, a lot of people was surprised; after all who associates Martin Scorsese with films particularly aimed at children.

However, this film is very good. It is beautifully shoot with great performances, and some spectacular special effects. Chloe Mertz steels every scene she's in and it features one of Ben Kingsley's best performances in years.

Excellent film. I think technically a children's film but in the tradition of Harry Potter can be watched by the whole family.
