A challenging book to get through, but a powerful polemic nonetheless. A book anyone interested in the debate about religion and religious belief should consider having in their library. I suggest watching a few Hitchen's debates on YouTube to supplement this book, to study the sorts of arguments being contested in the discourse between believers and none believers (plus Hitchens is a superb public speaker).

A thoughtful and intelligent book that questions and debunks religion in all it's forms. Only the truly faithful can resist the clean and clear conclusion that (any) God is not great and belief systems such as these really do poison everything. An easy but compelling read that will surprise as well as inform you whatever your particular delusion. Don't be afraid.

Resistance is futile !

Fantastically well written, no ranting, just simple hard truths about religion. Anybody sitting on the fence should read this book now. Anybody confused by religion should read this book now. If only more people could open there minds and look at all the evidence presented here, the world would be a safer, happier, and more pleasant place to live.

I think this is a wonderful book and only withheld a star because I felt the last few chapters were less coherent and gripping than the earlier ones!
I'd recommend the book to anyone of all faiths and none, but particularly to those who through their lives observing religious rituals by rote without ever seriously asking why!

An amazing and eloquent polemic on the monopoly and hypocrisy of religion and its claims on truth, morals, and the lives of people. The manipulation and disgusting abuse that the religions of this world are guilty of, are brilliantly exposed in this masterpiece. Hitchens truly was one of the greats. He argues against the common misconceptions that are a result of the church's power. Brilliant.

Everyone able to read should be asked to examine this book with an open mind, to check out the references, and to think long and hard about the content.

This book is the final nail in the coffin of organised religion. While it could arguably be said that the atheist views expressed by the likes of Dawkins lean towards fundamentalism themselves, the sheer endless honest recitation of facts put forward in this book, each one more damning to religion than the last, ultimately drives the point home harder. This book should be mandatory reading in schools

If you were ever sitting wondering what has held us back as a human race for hundreds of years, read this book. If you are a sensitive apologetic theist, best avoid it, as it will tear apart and obliterate most, if not all of your archaic superstitions and beliefs.
It takes a very large sledge hammer, (Science & Reason), to a very fragile nut!
If you think Richard Dawkins is harsh on this subject, you really need to read C.Hitchens. Christopher Hitchens does not pull any punches.
Chapter 16 is titled "Is religion child abuse?" which everyone who has children or cares about their psyche as they grow up, should read.
