I am not a great reader of poetry but the language in this little gem is wonderful.......... very atmospheric . I have read this many times and I keep coming back to it. Poety appreciation is a very personal thing but I can heartily recommend this modern interpretation of the Wanderer.
This was my first ever e-book purchase (Kindle for Mac) after resisting for ages the idea of reading a book on a screen.
Very refreshing to see this kind of text outside of an academic context. I like the fact that the Anglo-Saxon is not included in this edition, emphasising the fact that this is a superb standalone poem. And as well as the poem itself, there's a lot of fascinating detail in the introduction - the context of the poem within Anglo-Saxon literature, key themes, an insight into issues involved in creating this version - also excellent for anyone with little previous knowledge of Anglo-Saxon poetry or The Wanderer.
I'm really happy to have discovered Jane Holland's poetry and to have this text on my Mac - highly recommended if you work at a computer and are easily distracted by the Internet - instead of looking at Twitter and Facebook, click on The Wanderer and read it out loud. This will either inspire you to turn off the computer, unplug everything, go outside and consider the past, the future, and the human condition, or to simply return to your work fortified and enriched.
