It's a classic. The musicianship ( Al Anderson on lead, Sly and Robbie the rhythm section) is superb throughout and each song provides a new twist on familiar reggae themes. It is a wonderfully fat sounding production and the odd thing spinning around in the mix is part of what makes this a very 70's album that would sit alongside Pink Floyd more than the (reggae referencing) punk that was emerging as this was being made.
Lyrically there are no punches pulled here - these are songs are often angry and reference Rastafarianism. I Am That I Am is almost a hymn to his faith. But Peter had a way with a hook line and it is impossible not to sing along with songs like African, however odd the words might seem coming out of my mouth. That's the song where a sly ( no pun intended) sense of humour pops up as well.
The bonus tracks don't add much but neither are they terrible.

Totally brilliant and thoughtful, by one of the best ever songwriters in the universe, so savagely murdered. No justice. Everyone should listen to Peter Tosh, seriously. Thank you so much for this, and at great price.

A Reggae Classic and one of Peter Tosh's finest albums.
It features the excellent songs "African", "I Am That I Am", the epic title track and Tosh's signature "Stepping Razor".

The deluxe Legacy Edition includes songs that were recorded during the original sessions alongside dub mixes and alternate versions, a really good expansion that will be enjoyed by casual listeners as much as purists.

Must Own Reggae Music.
