David Tennant and Kelly MacDonald on a Scottish Island
on 29 June 2017
Hollywood star Lara's life is made miserable by her fans and the press in general, and one obsessed paparazzo in particular. Not even on her wedding day will they allow her any privacy. So she decides to get married on a remote Scottish island, the setting of her husband-to-be's bestselling novel. Only neither the island nor its inhabitants turn out to be anywhere as lovely as his book would have you believe. The island is bleak, with a bizarre, supposedly haunted, public toilet on a hillside the main tourist attraction, the islanders are first and foremost interested in making money out of the visitors on their island. When Lara's nemesis, the star paparazzo, turns up on the island, and the rest of the press isn't long following him, the bride goes into hiding, leaving her agent to come up with a solution to the wedding problem. He decides to hire a decoy bride and stage a fake wedding. Thus the island's only unwed female, the terribly unwilling Katie (Kelly MacDonald), is bribed into posing as the bride. When bridegroom James (David Tennant) discovers the identity of his new "wife", there is much bickering, and when the fake bride mentions that in the confusion she may have signed her real name in the register, the complications begin.
The story is not groundbreaking, but fun enough, and the unsympathetic light in which the islanders are shown borders on satire. There is definitely a jab at the tourism industry in there. This is not your run of the mill saccharine Hollywood romcom, that's for sure. And it's all the more enjoyable for that. The cast is good, and fans of David Tennant will definitely enjoy seeing him in this. However, the highlight of the film is Kelly MacDonald. She is absolutely hilarious. As long as you keep in mind that this is not a big budget Hollywood production, there is much to like about it.
As to the DVD: Picture and sound are good. There are optional English subtitles for those who may need them. Also included is a trailer, no other extra features.
