A good printer at a fair price
on 26 June 2013
I bought this after my Canon Pixma IP4600 bit the dust- something I do not regret. My first impression is the Officejet 8100e is a good printer. It is fast, the type is crisp and clear and a decently good black too, not "charcoal" as described by some reviewers. The colour output is good, but I still have to print some photographs - the Canon was good for this. Another bonus is the ink tanks are huge at two and a half to three times the capacity of my former Canon printer, and just a little more expensive (80 ml - black, 30 ml - colours). There is no separate photo- black though as on the Canon. I am less impressed by the printer's networking ability. After a long struggle I connected it to my network by "happy chance" rather than anything else. In addition, bought the "Tray 2" additional sheet feeder from another supplier, and it works well with the printer, but the set up was a bit fiddly as I use two different sizes of paper for my work.
I think this is my third or fourth HP printer, it's solid and well built, and if it lasts as long as the others I'll be a happy man. I would have given it five stars were it not for the difficulties I had setting up the wireless connection, and the less than intuitive way you have to set the printer up to handle two different paper sizes. Oh, and another thing, the documentation is just OK - I am afraid I am one of those guys who likes nice thick instruction manuals not the single sheet and few pages you get these days.
