For authors learning their craft, this book gives sound advice and good examples of how to outline a story. If you are a Pantser (Discovery writer) and you want to learn the art of outlining, this book is for you. If you are a beginner, you will learn a lot from this book. I thoroughly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 starsAn Introduction to Outlining
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 November 2018
An interesting introduction to one method of outlining, but didn’t work well for me in the kindle format – 3 stars

Firstly, I’ll get the negatives I found out of the way: In the main, this was due to the Kindle format just not lending this book to easy reference usage. There are no page numbers, and this led to me using multiple bookmarks. Unfortunately, I didn’t find this a satisfactory way of skipping to various sections to assimilate salient points.

I also have to say that I didn’t find the overall structure of the book particularly helpful. Interspersed throughout were comments from various authors on their approach to outlining, and, while these did offer-up fresh ideas, I felt they interrupted the flow of the main content.

There are plenty of positives though: This book is ideal for anyone looking to get started on novel writing for the first time. The content is presented gradually, in very simple language, and has plenty of examples of how Weiland uses the techniques she discusses in her own books.

It also explained the basic requirements of character arcs, time-frames, the importance of location, and provided some useful hints on how to keep track of and balance content. In addition, it makes suggestions for writing programs that any budding author might find useful.

Overall, this was a book that I wanted to get the most from, and I have since purchased a paperback copy. This I find much more useful as I can make notations in the margins which help me tie-up with other sections/pages. Plus, it’s a lot easier to navigate to a particular section that I might want to review.

This was recommended at the Romantic Novelists Association Conference in London this year.
I’ve been working my way through it and it’s been so useful for unravelling where my sixth novel has stalled - and where I might have done better on some of the others. You have to be tough with yourself as an author- because your readers will be! I bought the paperback rather than the Kindle so I can annotate and flick back and forth. Very useful.

Outlining Your Novel: Map Your Way to Success is another writer guide from the prolific K.M. Weiland. As will all of these kinds of books, your mileage may vary, but I found it helpful, and the key with all of this stuff is to try things, keep what works for you and throw out all the rest.

There is no one or best way to write a book. The only good way is the way that works for you.

The first few sections are about things I would consider well before the outlining phase personally. They are essentially a bunch of exercises to figure out what kind of story you want to tell with brainstorming and open-ended writing. I found them interesting tools to dabble with, but I usually know where I'm going, if only very broadly, before I put pen to paper.

The later chapters focused more on what I would consider actual outlining and were helpful. I've never been much of a planner (in life or writing), so any tips would improve things. I'm working on an outline for my latest book now, so I'm going to throw some of them into the mix and see what shakes out.

At least I have a roadmap for making my roadmap now...

I’ve been writing for nine years or so and I outlined here and there but for my actual novels, I barely used to do it. I was more of a go-straight-in so I was really sceptical in trying this out. However, reading this book made me realise how smooth my book would’ve went if I outlined and how fun it actually is.

She gives questions that you can use for your own works and ideas and checklists after each chapter so you know what needs to be done. I’ve started outlining my books now and it is so much easier to have everything there, my characters, scenes, big plot moments, etc, things I’ve never thought about that I needed to note down.

Outlining at the start will make you spend less time revising at the end because you’re still finding your story along the way without a plan.

I wasn’t really expecting too much to be honest, but this is an enormous help to me. I’m on chapter five and it’s helping me flesh out my idea into a much better story than it was before. It’s very easy to read and follow. I like the format.

I’m reading 1-2 chapters each day and making notes on my outline and characters. I’m very happy I bought it. I also got Creating Character Arcs, so that’ll be next to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars THERE'S AN INSIGHTFUL SENTENCE AT THE BOTTOM OF PAGE 82 WHICH BLEW MY SOCKS OFF!!

It sums up the very essence of writing compelling fiction. Do this, and you probably won't ever have to bother with any of the other fancy nuts and bolts of writing. Your grammar and spelling could be all over the place; your knowledge of the classics can be as ropey as hell; you could probably get away with having holes in your plot bigger than the one supposedly in Calcutta, and yet still your readers would forgive you and keep reading. They would just see your typos and ignorance of history and mixed metaphors and unrealistic dialogue as the small price they have to pay for the ton of suspense they will get in return. For me it was an epiphany. Of course, K.M Weiland isn't saying you should write badly or have holes in your plot. Quite the reverse, her book addresses all those issues and helps you avoid the pitfalls. But the principle she points out on page 82 is so powerful, that it could well save a book from oblivion. And apart from all the other absolutely brilliant stuff you'll find in this irreplaceable tome, a book which should be on every writer's shelf, you'll walk away with something priceless. Something which represents a value that goes way beyond the few bucks you'll pay for this gem of instruction, YOU'LL GET INSPIRED!! So go to it. ADD TO CART NOW!
Best wishes, Herbert Howard Jones (author of Lady Collendon's Cook)

I have only written short stories before, something that I am improving at steadily but I have ideas for a novel and I want to write that novel. It's a big thing to do and so I find myself looking for some help on how to go about doing that. I tend to take a really messy approach to short stories and that both bothers me and seems appropriate. Stories should be organic, they should grow and expand and change and be a bit messy, too tightly sewn up and they seem artificial. A novel maybe needs some control, some framework. But I'm afraid of this kind of detail, the outline. It sounds like a lot of work and it could kill the easy, organic nature of the story. This book gives me confidence that outlining is not what I feared. The process is beautifully discussed here and everything suggests the benefits outlining can give. The work required to do this seems worth it, a part of the process and even, maybe fun?! An outline can be fluid, she tells us, and like that, I get it. I've put some work into outlining my novel now and it feels like as much a fun part of the process as the actual writing. I feel like I'm in control of the whole thing but at the same time it can still evolve naturally and outline can evolve with it. This book made me realise how easy it is to get an outline together and how useful it can be to the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outline for outlining and then you can start writing!

I had rather reluctantly come round to the idea that outlining was a necessity, having previously held the view that the rather more glamorous seat of the pants style of writing seemed more fun and less work. But I just seemed to be going round in circles and not making any progress.
I had read several outlining books, none of which had inspired me, but the price and the blurb on this one did, adn did the Kindle format. But once downloaded the Table of Contents rather dismayed me by its comprehensivenes, as did the author's forecast of at least three month's of planning the outline. Three months just outlining?
However once I got stuck into it the book is quite easy reading, broken down into logical chapters and sections.
There is good advice on every section of the book and on such areas as characterization and plot.
There is room for you to plot as tightly as you wish - or to leave some room for characters to develop as you write.
It is all clearly laid out, along with clear arguments as to why you should outline rather than not.
There are many interviews from authors with their reasons for plotting.
I would stroingly recommend the book and the author's model for outlining, and I am currently using it myself to re-write my old manuscript in outline form.

This book is a gem in terms of writer's tools and is a MUST READ in my opinion. It's full of constructive and useful advice, which I not only found encouraging, but also inspiring. We all get stuck and we all worry about those days when we don't know what to write next. This book has really helped me move forward with a better understanding of the process that's involved when planning your road map of how you mean to write your novel. Sometimes great ideas can fail just because we don't know where to start or how to go on and that's when a solid outline is your best crutch. I've ordered K.M. Weiland's books on story structure as soon as I finished reading this book, not only because I thought it is full of brilliant tips, but I enjoyed the style it is written in. I highly recommend it.
