Disappointing - not up to his usual standard
on 3 April 2002
After his earlier (no pun intended!) albums I was really looking forward to this one - but it didn't live up to expectations. Hard to put a finger on just why, but somehow it feels like a band going through the motions... it rocks, but in a bloodless sort of way, and there's nothing here that grabs you like, say, 'Copperhead Road' or 'I Ain't Ever Satisfied'.
At the time Steve Earle was said to be heavily influenced by Springsteen, regularly performing three-hour sets just like The Boss. His other 'personal problems' have been well documented, too. So maybe these are the influences which made this album so disappointing? Whatever the reason, this isn't prime Steve Earle, so only buy it if you're a completist.
