Good that Amazon have at last got round to stock this, though to sell it as a Damien Wilson solo work is just plain wrong. The album is actually by Maiden United, an otherwise Dutch band with Damian on vocals. "MU" was born a few years back at an Iron Maiden fan club gathering in the Netherlands, but has grown into rather more than just your average "Tribute Band"
No prizes for guessing this is a acoustic re-rendering of the Iron Maiden classic "Piece of Mind"! Dutch bands from Golden Earring to Delain have long sussed that many a rock/metal number stands up just as well in a stripped- down (and usually slightly down tempo)"acoustic" variant as it does in its full-band, rocking-out original. MU here is very much still a "full band", simply one that replaces all solid guitars and - most key to their sound- the solid base with acoustics , but keeps "normal" rock drums and keys. What really makes the album work so well this way is a range of musical arrangements by Joey Bruers(founder & bass) and Ruud Jolie (guitars).
Personally I can't recommend this album too highly, but if you're not sure whether this is for you or not there are plenty of live gig clips on You Tube to help (Anneke van Giersbergen sometimes guests on these, but on the album only she is only on "To Tame A Land").
A new album "Across The Seventh Sea" is due out September 2012 (MU Website).
MU are due to tour UK again December 2012 following the new album release. I bought this first CD on their first UK tour last year, they sounded every bit as good live as on the recording. Even now it still all seems kind of surreal to have caught a band including Damian plus a third of Within Temptation (Ruud + Mike Coolen on drums)for £5 "on the door" in a Wakefield pub (The "Snooty Fox"- a " micro-gig "venue as good as it gets, just as well got there EARLY though , this band seems to run on Dutch Time (ie an hour ahead)even in UK, pub website didn't seem to have sussed that ....!)
