Essential – Jethro Tull

There are at least a couple of ‘Essential’ albums covering Jethro Tull. As far as I can see, there is an 11-track version dating from 2003 and this re-mastered version (with 16 tracks) from 2011. Confusing!

This 2011 Jethro Tull compilation provides a wealth of material for a single CD. The band, due in part to their penchant for art rock epics, have always been a difficult act to build an overview around, but these 16 tracks manage to be representative. I am sure many will criticise the track selection but it seems OK if not ideal, to me. The album is built around obvious tracks like "Aqualung," "Living in the Past," "Bungle in the Jungle," and "Locomotive Breath," and peppered with fan favourites such as "Thick as a Brick," "Bouree," and "Witches Promise".

I still have my original vinyl copies of most of the early Jethro Tull albums. However, I play this CD all the time in the car and it has a deserved place in my music library. The good news is that Prime members get to stream and listen to the album for free (check for the correct listing).

Tracks:
1. Living in the Past
2. New Day Yesterday
3. Bouree
4. Nothing Is Easy
5. Fat Man
6. Sweet Dream
7. Witches Promise
8. Teacher
9. Aqualung
10. Locomotive Breath
11. Life Is a Long Song
12. Thick as a Brick
13. A Passion Play
14. Skating Away (On the Thin Ice of the New Day)
15. Bungle in the Jungle
16. Rainbow Blues

A brilliant album. I'd forgotten just how good this band was and 40 years on, their music remains fresh and relevant. I no longer have their vinyl albums but this selection of tracks is a great refresher or intro if you arent familiar with the band.
Less than £2.50 16 tracks; snap it up, don the cans and sit back!

It's alright for the money. Nice collection, but the "Essential" Tull? No Heavy Horses, no Too Old to Rock 'n Roll, no Songs from the Wood, no Warchild, no Broadswo...well, you get the point. But each song in the collection is a good'n, and I'd rather have it than not. But on the whole I'd rather have the inessential Tull, no Dam Busters, no Stormwatch...no Cres...

If you're looking for an album with the majority of Jethro Tull's big songs on it then this is it. And for the bargain price at the moment it's very good value for money!

Another compilation. Cannot comment on the sound quality as I will not be buying it (have each track n times). My gripe is with the title. NOT essential hit singles. Missing is 'TEACHER' and 'LIFE IS A LONG SONG'.

Great songs, as expected. Happy memories.
I'll be buying Aqualung, next.
Don't have more to say, but I need to put more words in because Amazon's Review process requires it.

Splendid assortment of their big numbers all handily collected together.
Very enjoyable and good value if you want to get a flavour of Jethro.
