I collected several LPs in this series during the early 1970s and was delighted to see this CD version appear on the Priory Records website, from whence I bought it.

I put disc 1 on in the car recently and was absolutely blown away by the quality and sheer power of that opening Mozart F minor chord. I simply couldn't stop shivering at the thrill of hearing a "vintage" recording I thought I was unlikely to hear again. I had never, ever before experienced the clarity and quality of recording (yes OK there would have been surface noise on a vinyl LP), which was here achieved on CD. This, together with Noel Rawsthorne's sheer brilliance, made for stunning listening. Much the same can be said of the York Minster recording, on which the Tuba (Mirabilis)really cuts through the rest of the texture in a way I'd not noticed before. I remember my School Music Department had this LP in the 1960s and it never sounded quite as good then as it does now. I look forward to further treats from CD 3 onwards.

This is a boxed set I thoroughly recommend; although I paid more for it than I would have done at Amazon I think it is truly remarkable value for money.

I can only join the chorus of praise her. Most of these performers were my great inspirations in the 60s and 70s. Their quality will surely stand for ever as a mixture of knowledge, technique and sheer dedication to the art of organ performance. Today a few may sneer at an absence of "authenticity" in some of the performance styles, especially the baroque. But surely if you have a cathedral instrument at your disposal you wish to treat it as your equal partner. Purcell transcriptions (with some 32' pedal!) sound thrilling on the Liverpool organ and are fully justified in sonic terms. You can always sit at home and play them on the harpsichord if your conscience troubles you!!!

Thank you EMI - I hope these boxes just sell and sell. A most commendable issue!

This is the most amazing set of organ recordings. I got a few of them when they were first published on LP and I have been waiting for re-issue on CD ever since the CD medium was invented!

On LP their brilliance both as recordings and performances and also the splendid range of music was always a little compromised for me by the limitations of LPs with the crackling in the quiet bits and the potential for distortion in the loud bits. The CD versions remove totally these problems and we are able to really experience a remarkable series of recitals which come close to the live experience thanks to the totally brilliant recordings made by Brian Culverhouse. For me, Mr Culverhouse's recordings have never been surpassed.

I was amazed to see some comments complaining about 'penny pinching' on behalf of EMI. This is extraordinary as the cost of the well filled discs is just £2 each and unlike in some boxed sets, each disc is enclosed in a nice quality cardboard sleeve with a beautiful photo of the relevant Cathedral on the front and the music tracks and timings on the back. Added to all this is a CD-ROM with the full specification of all the organs along with articles about the series of recordings.

Anyone who loves organ music should buy this set!

Compared with the 19 original long playing records with their evocative sleeves, (which I once possessed) I would have to give this 3 stars - which is to say "It's O.K." However, the prospect of effortlessly selecting tracks; not having to turn each record over after twenty-or-so minutes and (best of all) not cringing in anticipation of distortion or stylus-jumping in heavily-modulated passages, makes the loss of visual quality/aesthetic production values a small price to pay. The excellent notes rightly point out that Heathcote Statham was one of the veterans among the organists in the series, and it's sobering thought that I heard heard him play many times, yet I'm not THAT old!

These discs brought back many memories. The original vinyl discs contained a far bit of distortion especially loud passages when the tone arm was nearing the centre of the record. These have none of course. Wonderful.

An incredibly important archive.
An early item to comprehensively review the major cathedral organs of the UK, played by some very prominent figures of their time.
Extremely well remastered, but the order of items/discs is a bit confused.

I was overjoyed to find the whole series on CD. I started collecting in the 1960's but never finished. It's a magnificent collection, in all round sound, with the sound turned up!
