Welcome Dark Ages Project
on 19 February 2013
As the author myself of a book on King Alfred, I wanted to like this documentary about the Saxon king's defence of his realm against Danish Vikings in the late 870s. The film scores because it is a pleasure to see this forgotten and neglected era of English history - all 600 years of it - the subject of attention. The enthusiasm of the presenters is tangible and the lifestyles of the peoples of the day brought to life. On the downside there are, to my mind, too many assumptions made about some events and, critically, they have determined that the final battle, Ethandun, was fought about 50 miles from where it actually occurred. But that is a matter of opinion. The producers should, at least, have spelt 'Edington' correctly on their maps and diagrams.
Lastly, though, this dvd gets three stars as it was a pleasure to find. It casts some much needed light on the formative years of English history.
