This was a well researched and well-presented piece of history. It may not be to everyone's liking because it did not use the computer graphics to elucidate points or battle sequences; which is now so much the practice. Nonetheless it was first rate; examining the battle areas and going through many points of history that were new to me, at least.

A good DVD full of information on the colonisation of part of britain by our bloodthirsty ancestors. Well produced using reenactors to colour the historic canvas.

Wonderfully interesting and detailed.

Presenters genuinely interested in their subjects, not just being "front men" for the cameras.

Presenters also honest and explained where there are gaps in knowledge of the time and best probability for working these out. They don't just make stuff up like some other DVDs I've seen.

Would be interested in watching more of these titles.

As the author myself of a book on King Alfred, I wanted to like this documentary about the Saxon king's defence of his realm against Danish Vikings in the late 870s. The film scores because it is a pleasure to see this forgotten and neglected era of English history - all 600 years of it - the subject of attention. The enthusiasm of the presenters is tangible and the lifestyles of the peoples of the day brought to life. On the downside there are, to my mind, too many assumptions made about some events and, critically, they have determined that the final battle, Ethandun, was fought about 50 miles from where it actually occurred. But that is a matter of opinion. The producers should, at least, have spelt 'Edington' correctly on their maps and diagrams.

Lastly, though, this dvd gets three stars as it was a pleasure to find. It casts some much needed light on the formative years of English history.
