Good performance, problematic zone encoding
on 25 January 2011
This is a classic interpretation, it gives the opera the right atmosphere. The recorded sound does not give the voices the studio "bloom" and Schwarzkopf sounds thin or shrill. If one hears her voice without knowing who is singing, won't be impressed at all. The rest of the cast sound much better. Is it the famous Schwarzkopf mannerism in voice production, like Sutherland's scooping, or just a bad recording ? As a production, the opera is very beautiful.
BUT, and this is a very BIG BUT, the encoding is wrong or something of the sort. It does not play on every ZONE 2 DVD player ! I have two of them, both very good machines, that play all zones. On one of them it does not play at all and on the other, it takes a while to fit, accomodate and start playing. While it plays , there are noices in the DVD player ! I played it through once, but I am afraid to play it again, not to destroy the player. I would have sent it back to Amazon UK., if I knew how. It is a very flawed technical reproduction. If it wasn't for the technical problems, the performance deserves 5 stars.
