Am I man enough to be able to recommend a series about a magical girl (who is really a duck) who saves people using the power of ballet?
Well, yes ... yes I am.
This is not your usual magical-girl-who-is-really-a-duck anime ...
The plotting is ingenious, the characterisation excellent and the animation great.
The plot is a lot darker than the summary suggests (well, it would pretty much have to be) and takes off in some very unexpected directions, especially in the second half. The general tone is a little like Disney's Pinocchio; this is fairy-tale land, to be sure, but the true blue Grimm's fairy-tale land, where very nasty things can happen and people may get hurt.
It's all very satisfying and remarkably cliche-free. Like the best invented worlds, fantastic as it is, it's perfectly consistent in its own terms.
And the music ...
