This is a lovely film, screen play from his own book by John Irving. The book is an epic tale of a whole lifetime (Wilbur Larch's), which the film inevitably compresses, leaving out a lot of wonderful detail and many characters, but the emotional depth remains, and the central conflict concerning the issue of abortion is well defined. Great performances too, highly recommend it - but important to read the book also.

An absolutely beautiful story... It's nice to see something 'real' for a change. Definitely not to be missed.

I watched this with my flu-ridden daughter (14) hoping to wean her off romcoms. Revisiting it after 16 years i loved it and she was drawn in against her will. Irving's story has layers of complex emotion and moral questions, beautifully acted; Tobey Maguire makes a more convincing Homer Wells than Spiderman, Charlize Theron gives a touching performance, although she hasn't stretched her acting wings in this, Michael Caine's atrocious New England accent is the one weak spot. Highly recommend.

A tale to haunt you for years. Michael Caine at his best (won an Oscar) and Carlize Theron before fame made her a bit pompous. Tobey McGuire pre-Spiderman and already rich in talent.

But at the heart is John Irving's story. This man has the talent of Walt Whitman or Henry Longfellow when it comes to waking our emotion with simple words.

John Irving's excels at: portraying complex and realistic characters; set in involved circumstances; in an unhurried journey of personal discovery.
You will not be disappointed
