Full ot twists and turns, as dark and dangerous as a river in flood.

An epic story set within daily life in a small town. Brilliant. Loved the sharpness of the writing, the sudden endings and new beginnings and, of course, the twists in the tale. Phil Rickman has made Ledwardine so real, that in some parallel universe it must actually exist. Along with Lucy Devenish and the magical ley lines so beloved by Jane.
As ever I adore Jane, her interests matching my own, although our ages are years apart. Phil Rickman completely nails the awfulness of the growing up process (is it ever completed??) and I felt for Jane as she struggled through the challenge of holding true to her beliefs in spite of the callous indifference of uncaring adults. Most of whom are only interested in money, as ever. Not that I don't also love Merrily... and Lol.....and Gomer....and Frannie... and on and on.
The flood is the epic part of the story, wild and out of control. Tensions rise along with the river water. The supernatural part of the story is well hidden, disguised as 'normal' events, a big surprise to me. This is my definition of a good read. I was riveted throughout.
