Absolutely incredible and even better than the first (despite being vastly different in terms of location, themes and plot). I finished the first book in a week and finished the second in just 4 days as I found it so captivating. Ever since passing the half-way mark of the second novel I've been researching Douglas Jacksons works and I'm very happy to see that the chronicles of Gaius Valerius Verrens currently stands at 7 books. I'm just starting the third book now and suspect I'm going to blitz through this series. I've always been massively interested in Roman military theory and history and some of the battles and minor engagements in this series feel so real and well researched. Whilst a certain degree of artistic license is unavoidable for characters directly portraying real life people I still feel that in light of everything we know about him, he's captured Nero to perfection.
