TOP 1000 REVIEWERon 16 December 2014
Everything The Miles Davis Second Great Quintet ever recorded in a studio at a ridiculously low price. The progression here is clear when compared with the live material from the same group, concentrating on standards, albeit played with ever increasing dexterity and almost telepathic sensing of where each other were heading. That's true of this box, except it's their own material.

Arranged chronologically, there's a good helping of previously unreleased material, alternate takes and full length versions to satisfy the most slavish fan. Of particular note is Tony Williams' drumming, holding everything together. Here is proof that he was the best drummer in the world, ahead of the more commonly listed rock drummers.

A supreme collection, though some have noted difficulties removing the discs - simply push straight down, do not pull. Very informative book revealing all manner of detail about the sessions too. Vital.

I can't believe that this is the first review of this collection on Amazon.uk as this album contains all the studio recordings of the second great Miles Davis Quintet who are arguably the finest group in modern jazz featuring Miles himself, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.
This collection contains all the tracks from ESP, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, Miles Smiles, Miles in the Sky, and the quintet tracks from Filles de Kilimanjaro and Water Babies. Added to that there are a number of alternate takes and unissued tracks. As I said, absolutely essential, and for less than £15 for 6 discs an absolute bargain.

Better than the classic quintet,in my opinion.Miles,Wayne, together created a Debussy like set of performances, that at once removed them from pure jazz, and cemented their place in the pantheon of great jazz recordings.Absolutely essential to any and every collection. That is all,it needs nothing else to be said.

Poor packaging design - you will damage either the cds or the case when trying to remove the cds.
