Veteran Joe Ryman is placed at the head of a rag tag group of soldiers with the mission to ward off an enemy attack. Then the waiting and talking is over and the attack begins. A quick burst of action, then a slow pace again. It's only then that you find out the location and time in the story are American Southwest, a few years from now and America's border looks like Afghanistan. What also becomes clear is that the veteran is on a mission that may be his last; to combat enemy smugglers. Then the last burst of action.
I enjoyed the banter between the men and loved the military jargon. The dialogue between the veteran and the newbies moves the story along nicely and fast. The dialogue is also very funny.
Being thrown in the middle of the operation and getting to meet the men in the first few pages, before the action made me want to finish the story as I wanted to know what would happen to them.
