This is the good news I've been waiting for! The first ever release of one of the Fifties underrated movies Richard Fleischer's Violent Saturday, in sparkling blu-ray CinemaScope.
Eureka must be congratulated on their achievement for presenting this excellent film in all it's wide screen glory and 4.0 stereo sound, particularly as 20th Century Fox have had such bad press in the States issuing their archive CinemaScope classics in a dreadful pan and scan version. So please Eureka let us have more of these excellent presentations.
I don't intend to review the film as such (I will leave others to do the job) but to say it's an fast moving crime melodrama expertly played and directed. Put this version on your must have wish list.

I ordered this film due to the cast, the director - having seen the superb Narrow Margin and Armored Car Robbery - and the year, as I love American crime films from that era having been spellbound since first seeing them as a child. Well, this one was certainly no disappointment being gripping from the first few frames. The cast, script, setting and direction are first rate. It was a pleasure to once again see two "beef-cake" actors in Victor Mature and Richard Egan show they were far more than their stereotyped image. The film contained scenes of the utmost tension and utmost tenderness and holds you from beginning to end. The dialogue and very clever weaving of plot and characters was a joy. Also, the DVD has wonderful picture (colour) and sound quality. So, cast aside all the modern dross and take a trip back to the golden age of crime films and prepare for a real treat. As you can deduce from my comments, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

This is when you need a 3 and a half on the Amazonometer. A bizarre mixture of soap opera and heist movie. Far too many sub-plots for comfort, some resolved, others not quite and some pretty unconvincing. However, the central robbery is well-handled, dialogue crisp at times and it has some pretty strong performances - let's praise Richard Egan's drunk. The most striking elements are the De Luxe colour which sits perfectly in colouring small town USA in the 50s and some quite surprising flashes of violence for the time. But chucking in the peeping Tom, the hard-up librarian and the sexpot wife of the copper mine owner with a yen for golf pros are all dilutants it could do without even if they are a 'commentary' on social 'issues'.

Some great Cinemascope photography in this mid fiftys tale of a bank robbery in a small town Arizona town that goes wrong and which involves several members of the townsfolk.Its a well told story with fine acting perfomances all round.Again the use of Cinemascope is exellent and well worth the purchase alone and has an exellent blu ray picture.There is also a dvd issued with the blu ray as well as a 32 paged booklet.If you like the oldies you cant go wrong.

The Brandenville Broth.

Violent Saturday is directed by Richard Fleischer and adapted to screenplay by Sydney Boehm from the novel of the same name written by William L. Heath. It stars Victor Mature, Richard Egan, Lee Marvin, Stephen McNally, J. Carrol Naish, Tommy Noonan, Ernest Borgnine, Virginia Leith and Sylvia Sidney. Music is by Hugo Friedhoffer and cinematography by Charles G. Clarke.

Stand Pat and Resist Evil.

A simmering powder keg of criminality told in beautiful De Luxe and CinemaScope, Violent Saturday is one of the definitions of a slow burn movie that pays off with explosive aplomb.

The town of Brandenville is the scene of a planned bank robbery by a trio of baddies led by Harper (McNally). The narrative has the trio arrive in town and plan for the robbery, as they move about the populace, a whole bunch of sub-plots pop up to maintain maximum interest and to of course set up the drama involving the robbery and the subsequent attempts at a getaway.

I don't blame him - she moves like a Swiss watch.

The characters are prime noir dwellers, they range from thieving dames and tramp wives, to a peeping tom, a drunkard husband and also a guilt ridden father, and this before we even get to the villains! Who, with Marvin in prime Benzedrine sniffing scumbag mode (he thinks nothing of hurting children), are truly shifty operators personified.

The Arizona locale is beautifully utilised by Fleischer and Clarke, belying the harsh side of the human condition that comes roaring out the Brandenville traps as the pic enters the final third. There's some murky moralising in said last third that irritates, more so when it involves a badly miscast Borgnine as a Quaker! While one character strand is annoyingly left dangling.

So it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. In fact some of the cast were less than enamoured with either their work on the film or the attitude of others around them. Yet, and while understanding the reticence of some to not afford it film noir status, it has the requisite characterisations and nasty bite to keep noiristas very happy indeed 7.5/10

It's well filmed, contrary to what another reviewer said. There's some heavy marital drama to fill it out, but there's a good thriller up front, Lee Marvin menacing as ever, and a slick leader. Ernet Borgnine as an Amish farmer, exuding piety, and Victor Mature as a non-war hero. The answer is violence.Great

I first saw this picture sixty years ago and time has not diminished its entertainment value. It is ninety minutes of pure storytelling something that is sadly missing from much of film making today. I can recommend it to anyone who enjoys an excellent taut thriller.

For me the heist was a dramatic device intended to spotlight if not a rotten society, at the least one with some serious social issues, issues which loom large in First World, or Western Societies today. Mining as an unsustainable resource, Banks that enjoy super profits, religious fundamentalism, the stalking of women, all loom large in Violent Saturday. Yet, the film tracks the lives of various characters in the society to see how they respond to crisis and how they are redeemed.
As in a Peckinpah film, children are seen fighting in the street which mirrors the wider society. The street fight eagerly observed by thirty children is between the son of a WW2 medal winner and the son of a miner who served the war effort by mining copper. By films close, the miner is redeemed by bringing down the bank robbers in a shootout on an Amish farm.
The Amish farmer realises by films end though he enjoys the protection of the wider society he cannot avoid defending his family when it is placed in danger, and has to resort to kill, despite the Commandment.
The Peeping Tom bank manager confesses to his target and she confesses her desire to reveal herself at her open window which she will no longer do.
The plutocrat reveals his deep love for his philandering wife, in a scene where he sobs with grief at his loss.
In short, everyone's guilty and we are all capable of redemption, provided we can just let the light in, as the Plutocrat's wife opines .
A much more interesting film than watching Lee Marvin do his thing with his inhaler - not that he's not good to watch - but the film is much richer than that. Carping by some about the "sub plots" is misplaced, as the mosaic of the society into which the bank robbers venture is far more interesting than their caper.

"4 x 3 Letterbox" says the official description of this edition of Fleischer's mini-classic, along with some flannel about the best prints available. I don't know about you, but as far as I am concerned academy ratio is NOT a letterbox format, unless painfully cropped top and bottom to the wider 16:9 shape. This is a film which has been shown just as disgracefully on UK TV and which cries out to be seen in proper ratio; anything else completely destroys the rich mise-en-scene. My advice is to buy the Spanish edition also to be found on this site, as at least the all-important letterboxing appears present and correct there. After all, why would you want to compromise, especially at these prices?

A long time since I saw this film which comes with bot a Blu Ray and DVD version. The film quality is excellent and the story is realistic, those who get shot are really hurt not leaping about being brave. Cannot recommend this film highly enough.
