This book has potential but reminds me of reading first finished drafts and not the end product. Some flaws:
The investigation plot is INCREDIBLY thin - it's so thin it could masquerade as the famous wafer thin ham of Vauxhall Gardens.
The hero is pretty good but lacks effective back story which is not to say back story isn't provided but it's rushed through and adds little to his motives.
There are too many side characters with her sister, aunt, father and fiance and his brothers, random society characters, dogs and servants etc etc. Sadly some of the side characters are more interesting than the main story...
The heroine is just annoying after a while. Why she can't accept he's fallen in love after the 4th or 5th time of him pretty much saying so I have no idea. She seems inexplicable.
There are too many red herrings like the painting, the random threat from the fiance, the sister's motivation, the hero's brothers (who whilst potentially entertaining add virtually nothing to the plot), the conflict between the aunt and the father...
It just feels unfinished and it's a shame because the set-up has potential but the plot is too thin to carry reasonably insubstantial characters.
