This is the first time I get to hear Joanna Macgregor and I'm truly impressed. Her style is sometimes reminiscent of Argerich (who, unfortunately didn't record any of the French suites) as it strikes as completely unaffected by "the correct way of playing bach". Just compare her take on the allemande from the French suite in C minor with Hewitt, Schiff etc. and it's clear how sensitive and effortless her phrasing is. If you're looking for a refreshing version of the French suites this set is highly recommended.

Not being familiar with these works I discovered many new delights with this set. I hesitated for a long time over which version to choose -- orchestra, organ, string quartet -- there was plenty to think about, but never once have I regretted this choice. The playing is crisp and achieves all the variation in colour that could be wished for. I'd recommend it to anyone.
