Don't bother with the Nimbus sourced Goodman performances of the first four in aircraft hangar acoustic. At a fiver this is the cheapest way to get Vegh's magnificent chamber sized performances of the last four. They are superb. If you think you've got enough recordings of Schubert, you haven't. Not until you have this set.
These performances are serviceable enough without being outstanding but what, in my opinion, really lets this set down is the over-reverberant recording. Schubert's orchestral textures, here, don't shine through clearly enough and when the timpani part gets going the sound becomes really muddy. Mainly because of this I didn't get much enjoyment from listening to this set...a significant admission considering what lovely music is to be found in the Schubert symphonies.
