Brigitte Engerer is one of the great pianists of our day, but she is almost criminally overlooked on this side of the Channel. Disc after disc attests to her discerning and heartfelt response to the plums of the Romantic repertoire, and her beautiful sound has been caught in all its myriad tones by the Mirare engineers. On this recording she plays with Boris Berezovsky, who is better known to British audiences, and their rapport is completely evident in readings full of passion and elation. It was recorded live which may account for its particular feeling of music-making caught on the wing, yet nowhere does their ensemble falter even for a second. The Liebeslieder-walzer are particularly delightful, if perhaps less well-known than the Hungarian Dances, and this duo couldn't be better attuned to their festive atmosphere. The photos of the artists convey their rapport to charming effect, and I would say they are my favourite piano duo of all! This really is what playing music is all about, and there are few things as joyous in life!
