I was hoping to read the sagas, and this book seemed to fit the bill. But in fact it is a learned book about the sagas, with lots of quotes and analysis. Interesting in its own way, no doubt, and very good if you want your literature analysed.

I skimmed over the chapters thinking it was just the intro and soon I would be reading the actual stories and legends of Iceland. But by about Chapter 8 I realised that the book was all analysis and description, and no actual legends.

So a neutral rating - good in its way, just not what I wanted

OK for the background to and commentary on the sagas, but is not the sagas themselves or even lengthy extracts

Makes more sense than any other daft belief system. If you are too weak willed to live with science alone, give this a spin. Plenty more books out there, including the sagas themselves.

I have a bit of a weak spot when it comes to myths and legends and so will love pretty much anything related to it. With that in mind, this book is among the most comprehensive if not the most regarding Norse legends. Yet, it's archaic language which at some points can be unnecessarily difficult to follow can distance the reader from the potential ferocity of several stories. So unless you're an avid aficionado of ancient stories, whose staple diet includes sometimes anachronistic literature then I wouldn't recommend. But it's free! So try it out but have a dictionary on standby!
