Very Good value for five hammer films. Won't bother reviwing the films content (as you've probably seen them in the past), so I'll stick to the product.
At the time of writing this (Sept 2014). it was £10 and free postage in the U.K. plus it arrived within two days (not bad for free post).
The box set is from the netherlands, and is region 2 so fine for the U.K. audience. At the main menu you have the choice to disable the dutch subtitles.. (The menus are written in English by the way, so no having to guess at what says what). the films play with the original sound in english and are not over dubbed in Dutch. so once you disable the subtitles, it's just like being back in the Regal or Granada back in the 60's /70's . The sceen format 16.9 (1.66).. which seems right to me (although I'm no expert), I don't remember Hammer being able to splash out on Spartacus type Super wide Panavision.
There are five seperate DVD discs, not those anoying double layered flipper discs.
Although (as I've mentioned), the screen menu's are in english.. the synopsis notes on the cover sleeve are in Dutch. but the actual discs inside are marked in english.
One thing that baffled me at first was how the actual box opened.. it may sound dumb I know... but my one was extremely hard to open, and I almost thought that you had to ripp the sleeve to get to the fold out section that holds the discs. But luckily after slipping a butter knife down there to free it, i found it just slips off either upward or downward, to reveal the seperate inner box that unfolds.. Hopefully yours will be free of that little glitch.
Quality wise. I don't believe that they are any kind of special restored version or even "digitally remastered" as they conveniently put on everything thats copied with tweaked saturation these days :-). But that said, these seem Fine quality to me, and must have been taken from at the very least broadcast quality prints, good enough to show on terestrail TV. No scratches, jitters or hairs in the gate and such.
There are a couple of minor Extras on each disc.. usually the cinema trailers and a mini documentary about some aspect of the hammer films.. Costumes etc.
I guess if you are an Avid fan or picky collector of Hammer films, you might preffer each film individually in it's release box. But if like me you are just a casual fan that want's a bit of nostalgia, then these are a very good buy. You may well, (like me), just want one of the films thats a favourite of yours, and think that for a tenner it's worth getting four others into the bargin.
I was after the devil rides out.. but as the stand-alone DVD of it was around £10.. I plumped for this collection and ended up enjoying the others too.
All in all Good value.
