the other two reviews have it yes- this is an album of emotive/acid/techno listening again to this cd after so many years is a joy. this cd is so much more than acid-house with which it was labelled at the time, with many different styles but all have a quality and depth that elevates this to classic status. what i love about this cd is that it stirs the emotions, has layers of different sounds AND moves yr feet with some dirty acid sounds in there. thats quite a rarity. includes my faves : lift (although i prefer the remixes versions on the single EP) in yer face, empire and olympic feature amongst other fine tracks. Bjork features also on two tracks so whats not to like? and all from "sunny" hacienda base :manchester in the uk. this has dated far less than many from that era.

A much more complete and consistent album than the previous '90'. It contains guest appearances from Bernard Sumner of New Order and Bjork. Made in the early 90's so you've got to remember before buying that this was made at a time when dance music was sweeping through the UK and this Manchester group contributed to it. It may sound slightly dated compared to today's dance music but the effort that was put into this album makes it much more 'real'. It's a mix of soft techno numbers and aggressive rave tracks. The opener 'San Francisco' is a melodic mix of techno and hip-hop while 'Lion' is a reggae-ish techno track. 'Lambrusco Cowboy' is one of the most abrasive beginning tracks 'the state' have ever produced, yet ultimately it turns into a melodic rave track. But this album is much, much more because it contains three gems of tracks. 'Cubik', 'In Yer Face' both contributed vastly to the early, quality UK rave scene before it lost its way, and are very influential tracks. While 'Olympic' is a melodic techno number that sounds so unlike anyone else. A testament to the way British dance music sounded when it made an effort.
Having bought this album shortly after it was released ten years ago, I can safely say that it has survived the test of time. Although characteristically 'primitive' in its sounds compared to more modern synth usage, the tunes themselves are very well crafted. There aren't really any wholly duff 'filler' tracks either which is unusual a 13 track album today. Listen out for some vocal contributions from Bjork who sang and wrote the lyrics for Qmart and Ooops.
