King of Mambo, NOT2CD481
50 tracks across 2CDs covering the period 1949 to 1962. Listen out for his unique arrangements of Yes Sir That's My Baby CD1/8; April in Portugal CD1/19; Lullaby of Birdland CD1/20; I Could Have Danced All Night CD2/4; The Syncopated Clock Mambo CD2/10 & The High and the Mighty CD2/14 all of which show how music from one genre can be arranged for that of another. You will hear many Prado originals across the compilation. The sound transfers are very very good and the informative liner notes are written by Not Now regular Helen Akitt. The running times for this set are CD1: 64.46 and CD2: 67.25 making for a most enjoyable tribute to The King of Mambo.
I suspect many will be thrilled by the exuberance of Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White (1954) and you may well know Patricia (1958) if not from its original release, can you believe it was also used in Royal Mail commercials between 1996 and 2003. Listen out for the classic Latin compositions Mambo No 5 & Mambo No 8. The big band standard Ciribiribin get a great arrangement CD2/22. If you feel like dancing then move back the furniture or roll back the carpet or simply sit back and turn up the volume. This is the kind of music that needs and deserves volume.
This is a most welcome addition to the Not Now Music catalogue that continues to provide top class compilations at a very reasonable price.
