This is an excellent compilation of some classic British TV shows from the ITC stock. They are all contained on a single Blu Ray disc in HD quality picture that makes them look the best they have ever appeared. The original shows were produced from 1962-1968 but look stunning in HD. There are five selected episodes in total. Each one represents a classic show. The disc is great in its own right as a compilation of entertainment, but it also makes a good sampler of not only the great shows but the full series DVD and Blu Ray issues already released on Network.
Retro Action 2 is an excellent example of HD picture on classic British TV. Like Retro Action 1 the Blu Ray HD quality is fabulous and it gives a whole new lease of life to the selected shows. On Retro Action 1 all of the programmes were in colour but here on Retro Action 2 two of the five programmes are in black and white. And in this matter the disc is not quite as great. But having said that all of the programmes selected, including the black and white editions, are all fantastic.
The set begins with an episode from the colour series of The Saint with Roger Moore. This looks stunning in HD and the colours are vibrant and strong. Based on the quality of picture here I hope there will be Blu Ray editions of the complete series in the future. The second episode is from the Black and white series of Danger Man. Another great episode and series and the picture is better in HD than on the excellent DVD release of the complete series. Then episode three is the excellent First episode from The Prisoner. This has been released before in HD on Blu Ray as part of the complete series in Blu Ray but this release offers anyone who has not seen the Blu Ray edition the chance to compare with the DVD release. Then episode four is another black and white episode this time from Gideon's Way. This is an absolutely wonderful series and this selected episode is one of the best.. It has only ever been available on DVD and here we see it looking better than ever. Finally episode five is from Man in a Suitcase and once again it looks better than ever. The black and white episodes and the colour episodes all have great clear and sharp picture I would like to see more episodes on HD Blu Ray. There are some excellent episode choices here as well and the whole thing is a great product as an illustration of retro and classic TV in the best picture quality that often looks like it was made yesterday and not 50 years ago.
As of this writing, I see Network have reduced the price of their Retro Actioners by a third, so now is the time to grab your copy. My initial quibble was that the price was almost 13 quid, but I dutifully paid it because this is great stuff...!!
The "Dangerman" episode here is from the later series and runs for about 50 minutes. The episode on the 3rd volume is from the earlier series and only runs for half that time. "The Prisoner" is the premier episode and a great introduction to this rather quirky series if you have never seen it before.
This is great stuff and it certainly looks better here than on any dvd I have seen. Most of these shows are British all the way. "Man In A Suitcase" has the obligatory American star/co-star that later shows had to have in order to make them more palatable for the American market (Tony Curtis in "The Persuaders, Stuart Damon in "The Champions" available on other volumes).
Great shows, Great stars. Look for a very young John Hurt in "Gideon's Way" along with the always welcome Darren Nesbitt. The gorgeous Dawn Addams guests in "The Saint"..ah, look... it's all good.
