Easy step toward reducing power consumption.
on 4 September 2015
I've bought 40 of these 20W MR16 12V halogen bulbs to replace over-the-top 50W bulbs to reduce the overall electricity consumed by some 1200W in total - that's the same as a hairdrier being on as a long as the lights are - not economical, nor environmentally friendly!! Still plenty of light, though obviously a little bit dimmer for the short-term.
As most low voltage halogens require transformers, one has to be aware that you can't just put LED equivalents as there are minimum (and maximum) loads to bear in mind...
In my case the 12V transformers (non-dimmable) appear to work for bulbs between 20-60W. Any lower e.g. 10W or even lower for LEDs and the lights flicker as the transformer becomes 'under-loaded'.
I figure that these reasonably priced bulbs will at least pay for themselves in a year by reducing the drain off the national grid. Next year I'll get an electrician in to replace all the transformers suitable for LEDs for even lower total wattage.
