Gungrave is the type of series that I heard alot of praise for from other anime fans. It was created by the same guy that did Trigun, since Trigun was a huge favorite of mine I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed. Gungrave is the story of two friends who join the mafia and progress up the ranks of the family. It is filled with sub plots of love, friendship, trust, and finally betrayal. It takes you on an emotional journey of the two friends, Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowel. It shows you how the two men grow and change over time, and the different paths they take in life. For Brandon, the family is all about honor and trust, while for Harry it is for power. You can see the development of both of these characters, and how much they change throughout the entirety of the 26 episode series. The second half seems to change course slightly into more of an action packed show while the first half was more like a well made crime drama. It is unfortunate that this series isn't more well known. Everything about it is terrific. The story, voice acting, music, and animation is excellent. I have to say that the ending to Gungrave is hands down, the best ending to an anime series I have seen. It broke my heart and pieced it back together all at the same time. There is also the themes explored through this series mainly dealing with loyalty, love, and friendship that is expressed so well in this series. I greatly recommend this series to anyone who loves anime. It's definitely worth it.

another great 90s anime series, this is a more serious series compared to others such as bebop and trigun but has tons more action crammed into it.
if you love old skool anime, then you will love this. highly detailed animation, great story and great voice acting.
a must buy from yasuhiro nightow, who will no longer be able to bless us with his amazing works of art.

The first half of the anime focuses on providing background for the original plot, while the latter half is a retelling of the events from the game (Gungrave). Stylishly animated with plenty of flashy combat scenes, there's nothing to be bored about with this series. What's more is that the re-write of the original plot fits into the anime perfectly, and isn't too far from the original continuity to be called off-cannon.
The end was one of the best in all anime. On par with Angel Beats, Zeta Gundam and maybe just below Gurren Lagan.
Well worth watching.

it took me a while to get into gungrave, as one of the other reviewers said. The first episode is kinda hard to follow for the first time. But trust me keep watching and you will love it. Its an epic story of friendship, betrayal, and revenge.
One of the best anime series I have ever seen. It moves from 2 friends who become disallusioned and turn to crime, to the setting up of a huge crime network similar to the mafia. The twist is that one of the friends is killed and become resurrected as a sort of Zombie that is very hard to kill. The other twist is that it is a zombie that is on the side of good. The story evolves around the 2 friends meeting up again on opposite sides of the law and their clashes. Great intro and outro and music. I cannot recommend this highly enough, it is superb
