EIGHTEEN MUSICALS FROM THE SILVER SCREEN
on 28 March 2011
With the exception of "The Wizard of Oz" from 1939, the remaining seventeen musicals featured here are drawn from the period 1948 to 1957. The process of integrating the score into the action on film had been achieved, so some knowledge of the plot is helpful, but not essential, to enjoyment. The songs are billed as original performances, and it's apparent that a number of them have been lifted from the film soundtrack, rather than separate studio recordings. The tracklist is quite minimal, and credits "Happy Talk" to Muriel Smith who took the part of Bloody Mary in the London stage production, and dubbed it for Juanita Hall who played it in the film. Judy Garland is credited for "A Couple of Swells" from "Easter Parade" but Fred Astaire is omitted. Sound quality is excellent, and although this set could have done with more detail, it would be churlish to withhold a fifth star at this price.
