Odd One Out of the Three
on 27 September 2017
Had to knock off a star for what was a much anticipated third volume in the masters set. Firstly it's great these have been released in a cheaper book size. The first two discs are A and B sides of singles released during the 70s. The second and third discs are alternate takes that give a behind the scenes look at the session and the final disc is comprised of live highlights.
My problem was and is the approach to this set by the producers which greatly differs to the 50s and 60s sets. This set should have contained all the 70s studio masters as they did and if space allowed then a disc of live stuff. Why change the brief for this set alone?
The songs and selections are great but as a set that's part of a series that was supposed to showcase the studio music it jars and becomes less listenable when compared.
A fourth set could have been dedicated to live performances, in fact the Vegas set does just that. So 10 out of 10 for content on this one but 6 out of 10 for presentation.
