Roseanne.....You Look Awful!!!
on 18 March 2013
Please note, the 2 star rating is regarding this product and not the actual show (which deserves 5 stars).
So anyway.... I bought the Roseanne boxsets a while ago when they were first released (apart from Season 9) but since they were all region 1 and I no longer had a multi-regional DVD player, I decided to buy this complete boxset so I could revisit my all time favourite sitcom.
But this boxset is a mess!!! Where do I begin?
First off, the packaging. How's your German? Because mines not so great, which is unfortunate as all the information appears to be in German, including the menu screens on the discs. 'Hoofdmenu' anybody?
The transfer quality is shocking!!! They clearly went to a lot of effort with the original DVD releases in regards to picture quality, ensuring that the show looked as pristine as it did when it first aired. These however look like they've been ripped off someone's treasured home-made VCR collection. The picture is grainy, the colours are all muted and occasionally break up. There's also a jarring blank screen interval midway through each episode, I suspect someone cack-handedly tried to edit out the commercial breaks.
Then there's a cheesy 'We'll be right back folks' message just before the final scene of each episode.
Furthermore, I get the feeling that these episodes are cut. I'm sure the one I watched the other night never made it past 20 minutes!!
All in all, it really does hammer home that feeling you are watching a TV show from a bygone age, which I guess Roseanne now is but I don't need to be reminded of that constantly whilst I'm watching the show. The original DVD's never did that.
Oh, did I mention extras? Well, there might be some on these discs somewhere but like I say, my German is a bit rubbish and I haven't found them yet.
Guess I should have just bought me a new multi-regional DVD player, it would have worked out a lot cheaper and less disappointing. If you're a fan of Roseanne I'd recommend steering clear of this boxset and invest in the original DVD releases.
