An absolute fave. A modern day Film Noir, dealing with the complexities of human relationships due to ego and insecurity. The usual then, nothing new there. But almost Hitchcockian, this harks back to a time of less sensational, darker love stories. The fact that I identified with Lee Williams's antihero Joe to an uncomfortable degree no doubt sways my opinion, but this remains a classy thriller nonetheless.

This is one of the rare gay movies, with so many twists and turns in the thrilling story!!! You think you know what will happen next. but you will
certainly be proven wrong!! Lee Williams is DELICIOUS!! you wont take your eyes off him!! And again it is rare in gay films that the acting of all the actors,is so good!! And it is a delight to watch the sceneries of the towns in Alaska . Dont miss, whether you are gay or not!! This one will be stored with care amongst the 5 STARS movies, Thanks.

A great film about the issues that can arise between any two people in a relationship of some kind. Not a soppy Hollywood romance with a happy ever after ending, but a great romance with a novel twist!
My only complaint is that the subtitles are only in German, and my schoolboy German is worse than my lousy hearing!

I cannot believe that I managed to miss this when it was out. It's brilliant. I had no idea what was going to happen at any point. And it is thick with atmosphere. I don't want to say much more about it because I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

The novel is well-known, with varying assessments of it. The film itself is well done and the acting is superb.

Student Tim (Lee Williams) lives with his grieving, widowed mother in a run down coastal town noted only for it's opera festival. Paealontologist(?) Ivo (Marc Warren), catches Tim's roving eye and he becomes besotted with the elder teacher. Their passionate affair runs the height of ecstasy until 'love rears it's ugly head'. There follows a lot of plot development involving murder, public school boy love (see 'Hothouse Society' by Royston Lambert), a woman in the middle (Isabel, strikingly played by Mikela J Mikael) and all the exquisite agony that accompanies Tim and Ivo's tumultuous relationship, until a revelatory and shocking finale. All this is brilliantly staged and superbly acted by the two leads who spark off each other, and a talented ensemble cast.

This is a superb film in virtually every respect and I feel lucky to have discovered it and it's odd lack of availability from the other reviewers. In fact I only decided to buy it because of their collective enthusiasm and I'm glad I did.

It is one of the best films of this genre that I have seen and I cannot believe it has not had a wider distribution. So hats off to director Tom Shankland and all involved in this project.

Vivid cinematography and AUDIBLE dialogue combined with suspense and a blistering love story make this a must see. The soundtrack focuses on 'Der Rosenkavalier' by Richard Strauss whose uber-romantic, soaring melodies add enormous poignancy to Tim's guilt-ridden reflections. (The film itself reflects several of the themes in the opera - lust, sexual confusion, the effect of the passing of time - ). Trailers and a stills gallery comprise the extras. The jacket is all in German but you can turn off the German subtitles. Highly recommended.
