All these pieces are so well known that listeners may come to them with pre-conceptions based on performances by the many artists who have also played this music. In such cases it is the interpretation and execution that are important. Nigel Kennedy has the technical brilliance and independence of mind to play standard favourites in a way which allows listeners to hear them with fresh ears. His technique involves power, delicacy, perfect tone and the ability to be precise in his location of each note while moving smoothly and rapidly through phrases and scales with the bravura expected of this musician. At the same time and because of this technical skill, he can toy subtly with musical phrases and rhythms to bring new emotional emphasis to a piece. For me, this is displayed particularly in his performance of the ever-popular 'The Lark Ascending' when his sheer technical skill allows the last notes in the highest register to fade away to nothing, precisely - you think - as Vaughan Williams intended

I love Elgar and I greatly admire Nigel Kennedy and to find both on a cd at a very reasonable price is a rare treat indeed. Nigel Kennedy's rendering of The Lark Ascending is excellent.
