This is an excellent product for taking pictures and shooting movies. You can shoot Half HD (720p) directly in MOV file. The image focus and stabilisation work great.
Pictures are of great quality thanks to the Leica 1:2.5-5.9f lens. You can shoot decent pictures even with less light, which is useful if you want to take a close up of a baby without the flash. I personally prefer taking pictures at the maximum resolution 12Mpixels in the 4:3 format. Other formats are available 16:9(9Mpixels), 3:2(10.5Mpixels) and 1:1(9Mpixels). The filters for Sepia and B/W are good. Pictures are stored in Fine JPG. The face recognition and focus subject tracking work very well. I only used the Intelligent Auto Mode so far, which produces excellent pictures. You can control the exposure, the white balance and even get a dynamic histogram displayed from the Standard Rec Mode, which offers you more choices.
The resistive LCD is not extremely sensitive but is of good quality, although the viewing angle is not the same as wide as you may wish. The icons are 10mm x 6mm, which is a decent size even if you have large fingers. The icons are generally displayed in two columns on either side of the LCD, so that you can operate the camera with both hands. You can select two of your favourite functions and make them accessible from the main screen. The menus are simple and icons are self explanatory. I have not got the chance to use the camera in direct sunlight, but the display has a setting which allows the brightness to be automatically set depending on the ambient light. You can conserve power by setting a sleep idle timer.
The camera takes crystal clear photos. I love the large touchscreen and the moveable focuspoint, it ensures always well focused pictures. Apart from chosing where the focus point should be, I only just press the button. The results are fantastic. You do not have to re-compose after focusing; once you've chosen the area that should be focused, you just shoot. My father has a brand new Leica costing 1500 dollars, it cant beat my little Lumix.
The design is exclusive and the camera fits nicely into the pocket because of its small size.
The camera is absolutely fantastic at taking macro pictures, a whole new world of photography opens up with this camera.
Best camera I ever had, and it takes great videos as well.
This is a great little camera, and there are plenty of other comprehensive reviews out there. However, having used it for some time now, I find that the battery life is not what I had expected, especially if you use it infrequently. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if Panasonic hadn't decided to use a non-standard connection to recharge the battery. You have to remove the battery and recharge using the external charger (supplied). There is no means (as far as I can tell) of simply recharging from a handy USB port. Would it have hurt them to make the charger socket either mini-USB or micro-USB?
I bought this because it had good reviews. I have found it easy to use and particularly like the large flat screen which is the size of the whole camera. The zoom is easy to use. I am not a great camera expert - I like to just point and click, so this suits me fine. Some software comes with the camera for picture editing using a PC and this is the default, but I prefer to just download pictures into a folder on my PC. Have not used movie option yet, so cannot comment on that.
High quality throughout, small compact camera, high resolution large screen responsive touch, battery lasts ages, even takes 3d pictures, link up to TV with an HD lead to appreciate your pictures or HD videos worth every penny.
Bought this for my partner who is a keen but not technically oriented photographer. She wanted a better result from her pictures. So far she is very happy........now we get to the download stage and whether that is as easy as her previous camera?
