Works well mostly but could be refined
on 31 October 2011
Mostly this scanner works well but not as well as some reviewers suggest.
One problem with hardware
It can be difficult to get the paper to load straight, especially if the leading edge is not perfect. The software is meant to counteract this but see: problems with software.
Problems with software:
1. Correction of skewed paper feeds: this seems to work OK with sizes smaller than A4 but with A4 this is correction is limited. I assume that Fujitsu would not be too worried about this as Americans do not use A4 but a small standard paper size. In addition to this the "anti-skew" feature is not the default and you have to search to find and set this in the software.
2. Page orientation: there seems to be some sort of feature in the software to detect if the page has been inserted upside down. Unfortunately sometimes it turns an incorrectly inserted page upside down an you have to correct it yourself.
3. Language: the software is loaded into the same language as the operating system of the machine. You have no choice. So if you buy a computer abroad but don't know the specialised software vocabulary in that language you will find operating the software a little confusing.
Despite my reservations above this is a very useful device, I like in particular its size, it will fit onto most desks without getting into the way and can be packed into a briefcase. Mostly operates well and you can do many things with the post scan software.
Three stars but it certainly would have been four except for Fujitsu's Americans get the best deal policy. They get the machine at nearly a 20% discount even allowing for the UK VAT (Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com prices) they have several ways you can get help including an 0800 number and a chat line which refuses to help you if you didn't buy in the USA. All the UK has one of those dreadful online forms or an 0870 number so you really are paying extra for the support.
