Made in 1971 vampire circus was part of a package of films for Rank. hammer were trying to tell the vampire story in a new way, so they came up with this tale of a travelling circus that puts on a show for the citizens in stetl, a small austrian village town, for years the town of stetl has been struck down by a plague , when the circus of night comes to town it gives the villagers new hope, but unknown to them, there is a greater danger from the circus performers, then the plague. its not the greatest hammer horror ever made but its ok. bonus features, the making of the film a new doc, poster and still gallery, history of circus doc, plus the trailer, and more.pq is very dark in places in this blu ray from the usa, but looks ok in 1080p 1.66.1 16.9. warning will only play on region A players.

TOP 500 REVIEWERon 10 May 2012
This is a really imaginative film and beautifully handled by Director Robert Young. It's a shame however that it has not really been restored. The transfer is okay and better than the DVD version but it's still lacking in several sequences. Perhaps this is the fault of the original but at any rate it's as good as you will ever get. A strong cast - featuring Anthony Higgins (Draughtman's Contract etc) who was called Anthony Corlis (or something similar !) back then, and the lovely Adrienne Corri - as well as a host of featured British B movie actors - and a rather splendid vampire-in-chief. The circus scenes have a real magic about them and the whole film has a lyrical fairy tale quality which perfectly suits the subject matter. Beware it is Region A encoded so you will need an Oppo or other mullt-region blu ray to view it.

one of my favourite of the Hammer "post-watershed" vampire movies where nudity is more explicit than the previously hinted; attractive ladies, the usual victims ignoring danger and the delicious Adrienne Corri; doesn't get much better in the Hammer pantheon.

70s vampire yarn from hammer
A vampire lord is killed by villagers
And years later his cousin arrives to take revenge, when the film was first released it was a simple. Horror flik

But now due to the first few minutes many film critics take a dim view of the plot not that its bad but due controversy
over the behavior of the vampires lover in the role at the start of the film

I knew little of this one, and have no hazy memories of seeing it on TV in the dim and distant past. Hammer were skilled at getting mileage out of vampires and did a good job here, with a classic Hammer village set close to the pine forests of deepest Middlesex, sorry, central Europe, being terrorised by the local vampire. A travelling circus which mysteriously arrives at the height of an outbreak of plague causes further mysterious goings on. Not so many Hammer familiar faces here (though there are some) and featuring a young Lalla Ward in her pre-Doctor Who days, this is an enjoyable romp and features superb picture quality. Not so well known these days, and it's not outstanding in any way, but well worth watching.
