As someone who as been a fan of Rugged Man, back as far as when he was known as Crustified Dibbs and recorded C**t Renaissance with Notorius B.I.G., throught to his time on Rawkus and few awesome 12's he released with them, I have been waiting for a full length album quite some time. As always RA comes correct with his lyrics, especially on the brilliant "Lessons" on which he tells the story of his existence with he rap game, over a fantastic beat and Sadat X vocal sample. Whilst RA keeps the lyrics tight throughout, many of the beats on this album leave a lot to be desired. Which is why I knock a star off, but nevertheless it is still a dope album.
I haven't heard this record yet but I am expecting a 5 star corker. If you know this guy, you will understand that this album has been a little while coming to say the least (10 years+). To those who don't know, this is THE BEST MC you never heard. I am only talking from past work: See Soundbombing Volumes 1 + 2 (forget the 3rd installment!). RA is the MC's MC. Ask Biggie Smalls (oh, you can't).Ask the Neptunes (rumour has it that they're DYING to work with him).Ask High & Mighty, Sadat X and so on and so on. Anyways, i don't condone filesharing, but look up RA on Kazaa, and download everything you find, coz if it ain't on this album, it'll never see the light of day apart from the few limited 12's out there. The guy is sick.
Right, I've heard the album now, and guess what? IT SUCKS! I'm not happy to write this, but its true. And you know what the funny thing is? I bought this from an American site, and they included a disc of R.A's classics, and you cannot compare the two! His classics are classics, but this latest offering (or should I say, his 1st official LP) is just rubbish. Its not his fault entirely, as he is one tight MC, but the beats let the whole thing down. Bland hip hop by numbers. R.A, if you reading this, SORT IT OUT!
