This is a review for True Grit [DVD].

A classic western. John Wayne is playing an enjoyably larger than life version of himself. Strother Martin is a hoot. Kim Darby and Glenn Campbell do well. Elmer Bernstein's score is suitably majestic and moving (the scene with Mattie holding her late father's pocket watch to her cheek). Gorgeous cinematography - none of the draining the colour out of everything with computer jiggery-pokery you get these days!. Breathtaking scenery.

What makes this version so much better than the remake is it can be both serious and light. The remake/reboot/re-imagining takes itself waaaaaay too seriously. Also, you can understand every single word spoken by the actors in this original version without resorting to the subtitles - unlike the mumblings of Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, et al in the new film.

Film ratio is 1.78:1. Audio is mono. Picture quality has some grain and the usual amount of dirt, scratches, specks, etc. The sound is serviceable.

Extras - a trailer. Languages - English, Spanish, French and Italian. Subtitles -
English, French, German and many, many more.

This is one of John Wayne's best films and one of the greatest westerns ever made. As an added bonus (for Trekkies/Trekkers mainly), try and spot all the cast members who made a guest appearance in Star Trek The Original Series - there's quite a few!
