Tom Petty has recorded some fantastic five star albums and his standard has been consistently high – few dip below four stars. This is one of his best. Recorded in 1988-9 soon after the formation of the Traveling Wilbury’s, Jess Lynne produces the album (with Petty and Mike Campbell) and George Harrison and Roy Orbison (shortly before his death) each provide guitar and backing vocals on a track. Lynne shares songwriting with Petty on seven tracks, including the uptempo hit singles ‘Free fallin’’, ‘I won’t back down’ and ‘Runnin’ down a dream’, the haunting ballad ‘A face in the crowd’, the Wilburyish ‘Yer so bad’ and the Bo Diddley-influenced ‘A mind with a heart of its own’ . Campbell co-wrote with Petty the Stones-influenced ‘Love is a long road’, there is a cover of The Byrds’ ‘Feel a whole lot better’ and the remaining three songs comprise two Petty rockers (‘Depending on you’ and ‘The apartment song’) and a Petty ballad (‘Alright for now’). The album is not over-produced by Lynne, except perhaps for the final track ‘’Zombie Zoo’. On Full Moon Fever, Petty stands at the peak of his creative powers. This album contends with ‘Damn the Torpedoes (1979)’, ‘Into the Great Wide Open (1991)’ and the 1976 debut 'Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ as Petty's finest.

A chance comment by a family member who loved a version of Free Falling inspired me to revisit this fabulous album. They didn't know anything about Tom Petty or even that he'd written the track. I played them the original and they loved it. This was the sound track to a wonderful summer and it all came flooding back when I heard it again. Running down a dream, with its rolling riff remains the best driving track I know.
Petty is a total original and if you've never heard him start here, you wont be sorry.

Around the same time as this was released he teamed up with Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and Roy Orbison to create the Travelling Wilburys. The album was released just before Roy Orbison passed away. Each member bought their own particular genius to bear but the total is greater than its parts. The album is like no other collaborative project I've heard and each participant is allowed to shine without eclipsing anyone else. The songs are beautifully crafted and its a great way to introduce yourself to each artist if you haven't been there before. Its a joyous collaboration and its song memorable and infectious

I had this CD for ages but lost it when I moved. It's always been a favourite so
when I saw it on sale for a very reasonable price I had to get it.I'm always
confident that the CD's are as new as described at Zoverstocks as I've had
quite a few from them and they are always perfect and arrive on time and
well packaged.Very satisfied.

This is one of Tom Petty's best with some great, memorable songs - e.g. 'I Won't back Down' and Free Fallin' and 'A Face in the Crowd'. Everyone should have a copy.

The Jeff Lynne influence is prevalent and that is not detracting from Tom Petty's abilities. If you liked The Travelling Wilburys then this is bound to leave you with a smile on your face. Tom Petty might not be a name on everyone's lips but the guy has lasted where others have faded.
