After one of the indie debut albums of 2009 (Album), Girls come back with a very strong, 6-track EP (a mini LP, morelike). If the general approach remains indie, the sound is much less lo-fi as a full band including a horn section and erm a pedal steel-guitar now accompany frontman Christopher Owens. The songs are varied in sounds but with a distinct emphasis on pop. Delightful 1960s and 1970s influences coalesce on all tracks including the closing 'Carolina', a mini psych-rock opera of sorts.

Fantastic lyrics, often crushing as Owens laments lost loves and shares his angst in its many forms. Beautiful vocals, addictive melodies and dreamy instrumentals (replete with horns, pedal steel and whining hammond) all blend beautifully together. While often melancholic, in no way is this a depressing album. The faster-paced track 4, "Alright", provides a well timed change of tempo without dispensing with the horns that are seemingly omnipresent in this EP. The final track, Carolina, transforms an eerie, almost psychedelic, start into a toe-tapping guitar riff-infused finale. There is a nod to Elvis Costello in a couple of tracks but these guys definitely bring their own sound and style which blends rock n rock, 60s pop with beautifully lyrical country ballads. I would like to respond to the "thank you for listening" on the back of their CD sleeve with a "thanks for creating such creamy tunes that are a delight to listen to".
