If you are already a committed Alkanian, this disc is self recommending.
Superbly performed and recorded, this disc contains a couple of first recordings and demonstrates wonderfully what admirers of the composers find so appealing about his oeuvre - that amazing inventiveness and quirkiness of character is evident in abundance here.
Often, recordings of two pianos are distinctly substandard but there are no reservations whatsoever here. The recording is clear, sonorous and wonderfully detailed.
A superbly realised version. Alkan was a consummate pianist who is said to jhave made even Liszt uncomfortable by his presence. One of his favourite instruments was the pedalboard piano, which hardly exists today,so these works are almost totally neglected: if they are played at all it is usually on the organ, for which they are plainly unsuited. These arrangements for piano duo (or duet) are not a compromise but a brilliant solution to the problem of performance.
