TOP 1000 REVIEWERon 11 August 2017
I see this film rated only middling on Rotten Tomatoes, but I really enjoyed it. The movie charts the journey of Howard Marks from Welsh school boy and unlikely Oxford scholar to international drug dealer. The film pays great attention to period detail (I can judge this, as I am of this generation) and a superb performance by Rhys Ifan, who was the perfect choice to play Marks. A complicated man who was brainy and charming, Marks loved his family but could not resist the lure of easy money via drug trafficking. An accomplished con man, he played fast and loose with the truth, often with surprising success. David Thewlis is also excellent as the excitable IRA arms smuggler Jimmy McCann. I have not read the book so cannot comment on the film's allegiance to its source but can recommend the film without hesitation.

I read the book about 18 years ago, and it was one of my first forays into weed culture. I was sucked in immediately, love it to pieces and have read it several times since. It was as big an influence as Fear and Loathing was.

The film adaptation does suffer from having to cut out a lot of the book. For example, there was no mention of the crazy travel system he set up, escapades on the run, or in all honesty, a lot of the dope deals and the shenanigans around them. It barely dipped into his money laundering, and a lot of his friends were overlooked.

All that said, it is a good flick. David Thewlis drew on his earlier role in Divorcing Jack, only cranked up a notch, to do the stand out as Jim McCann, who for me was an obvious stand out character in the book as well. Thewlis was the perfect blend of ultimate seriousness and dark comedy. Ifans could do no wrong in the main role. It was like watching Stephen Fry step into Oscar Wilde. It was a part made for him.

The film follows the same track as the book, building from Marks getting sucked into the (mostly) hash trade, breaking down how it worked, and then ultimately what went wrong leading to his busts, the trials, and the fallout from each. It carries the same devious sense of humor as the novel, as well as the same sense of regret when things go wrong.

I will always have fond memories of the book. Better with a smoke. 4*

Marvellous story; Howard Marks is a bit of a folk hero to some people in our country (Wales) and Rhys Ifans, who was a good friend of his, is fantastic in the lead role; he was born to play Howard, I can't imagine anyone else that could do it justice.

Quirky, funny, well acted and a good script.. Is there anything Rhys Ifans cannot do? Just a good all around actor..

Enjoyable biopic of a successful businessman who went to Oxford University, he just happened to in the drugs business!
It was mainly marijuana though, not hard drugs that he imported, and there is the question of whether this should still be illegal nowadays. It is a light hearted crime caper at heart though and has some funny moments.
